Furtherdetails of Barnato’s suicide ■how that in consequence of his nervous condition care was taken never to leave him alone. At the time of the tragedy he was walking on the deck leaning on another passenger’s arm and appi ared to be in good spirits. He asked his companion the time, but before the reply could he given Barnato wrenched his arm frse and jumped overboard. Notwithstanding the fact that the steau.er in which he was a passenger was steaming at the rate of 17 knots an hour and a heavy sea running, the fourth otlicer jumped into the sea and made a gallant attempt at rescue. A boat was immediately launched, and picked up the otlicer in an ex-ban-ted condition. When recovered Barnato’s body was boating head downwards. Mrs Barnato was on board the steamer, accompanying her husband to England. Camstowx, June 16. Th Cape Parliament aeljourned on receipt of the news of Barney Barnato s deutb, and the Cape and Hand Stock Exchange closed. Eds death has bad a depressing effect on African stocks generally on the London market. The deceased, who was born in London in ueedy circumstances, became wealthy through his successful operations with the Kimberley diamond fields and Johannesburg goldmining shares. His association with Mr Cecil Rhodes brought him prominently before the public. He was a Jew, and a brother of a travelling showman.
