Pahiatua Catholic Presbytery.

The new Catholic Presbytery, the contract for which is rapidly drawing to a conclusion, has been built on the land adjoining the Church, being a portion of the five acres which is owned by the Church authorities. The building is a neat-looking erection with a half-verandah in front and pedimonted portico, aarmoented by a Homan Cross at the front deor entrance, the frieze of the verandah being filled in with panels pierced, so as to give the building a character. The eaves of the building are finished beneath with cut brackets, having moulded panels between. On en tering the house through a front door having fanlights and sidelights glazed with diaper glass, the hall, 7ft wide, is j divided from the hack passage by a pretty archway with moulded imposts and arc hi volts in polished red pine. The hall is papered with a sage-green paper, with linoleum dado below, and witu wooden cornice in the angle of the building; the passage has been similarly treated, except that the paper is figured instead of being sage colored. To the left of the hall ie the reception room, 16ft square, exclusive of a large bay window, which externally is surmounted by a Celtic Cross. In addition to the bay window, tho room is lighted by a triple-light mullioned window in front; the walls are finished in distemper to a cool grey color, with linoleum dado below, beautifully tinted paper frieze above, finishing with a heavily moulded wooden cornice. Behind the reception room is the dining room 16 x 15, the walls of which are finished with a heavilybronzed paper with linoleum below and eornice above, the lighting being from a triple-light mullioned window. In this room a beautifully finished side board of polished rimu has been built in. On the right hand side of the hall and passage are two bed rooms, each 15 x 12, tbe front : one being lighted with triple-light mullioned windows, and each room bein? neatly papered and having a wooden cornice in the ceiling angle. The batb room at the end of the cross passage is fitted up in first Hass style, and is a room abofct 2 x 7. The cross-passage separates the front part ©f the house from the housekeeper’s department, which consists of a kitchen 17 x 12, the ceiling being lined with varnished rimu, of wnich also tLe dado is formed; one of Luke s b«*st ranges has been built ia. as also a small but neat dresser. The housekeeper s room is to the left, and is a convenient and airy room 11 x 10; to the back is the panlry 8x 6. , lined with varnished matchboards and fined up conveniently with shelving; ad , joining the pantry is the scullery, with tellar below, fitted with porcelain sink, drainers, plate rack, shelving, etc. The i whole of the rain water is led to tanks st the rear of the building, elevated on a stand, with meat safe below, and from ) whence the water is laid on to the oath room, scullery, and kitchen. At the rear of the property the outbuildings have been 1 erected, consisting of wash-house with [ copp»r an<l washtubs, with water laid on ; woodhouse. fowl bouse, etc., and close against the fence is the stabling, consisting of groom's room 12 x 9. stables with loose boxes for two horses, coachouse. an 1 hayloft above. Taken altogether, the Presby-

tery is a decided addition to the PHuatua buildings. The contractor was Mr M. Sullivan, and the architect. Mr Geo. K. Bond, of Masterton. \Ye understand that the place has ci st about £550. and that ti.e formal opening will take place about the

end of tho month, when the Archbishop of Wellington is expected to be present.
