Received 1.20 a.m. The Ringarooma. Sydney, September 20. Tha Lizard has arrived at Noumea with news that the Ringarooma has been made seaworthy, and leaves Port Sandwich today under the Orlando’s escort. She will sail thence to Sydney. The Wallaroo returns to Auckland.

The Victorian Elections. Mblbourne, September 20. The eleetions so far as can be gathered will result in the defeat of the Government aad a victory fer the Liberal party. All Labor members were retured. Three ministers will lose their seats and probably four. The returns are incomplete as yet, but Mr Bent, the Speaker, and Sir Bryan O’Loughlin have been defeated, while Mr Turner, leader of the Opposition, and Smith, Murray, Hon. Outtrim, Reid, Carter, and Deakin have been elected. Sir J. Patterson, Premier, secured his election at Castlemanie, but as junior member. Mr Fink defeated Mr Bosisto. Received noon. Melbourne, This Day. The Hon. Mr Richardson, Minister of Railways, the Hon A Baker, Minister of Customs, andjthe Hon L. L. Smith were defeated. Sir Graham Berry and the Hon. William Shiels were returned. Sir J. B. Patterson is junior to a Labor £frnabsr. Twenty-nine old members have been rejected. The Opposition Labour members met with great suecess and the victories are marked by large majorities. The Labour representatives secured eighteen seats. Mr Trenwith was reelected. The following indicates the state of the parties:—Opposition, 65; Ministerialists 30. Those in faveur of the tariff reform number 58, and supporters of a higher tariff 37.

Notice of Motion. Brisbane, September 20. Xotieo of motion has been given for a select committee to enquire into the strained relations with the Railway Commissioners. Received 7.30 a.m. Fatal Train Accident. Sydney, September 20. A serious railway collision occurred between Waratah and Islington, on the northern line to-day. A goods train ran into another composed of empty cattle trucks. Robertson, a fireman on the former was killed instantly. The driver, Considine, is in a critical condition. The guard and assistant are badly injured. The stock train was stationary at the time, and the driver was busy oiling the locomotive. The guard seeing the other train approaching ran to give warning, but was too late. The train was coming on at the rate of fifteen to eighteen miles an hour. It dashed into the rear of the trucks and besides the loss ef life a large amount of damage was inflicted on the rolling stock. It is alleged the cause of the accident was disregard of the signals. Received 11.45 a.m. A Cable of Thanks. Sydney, This Day. The Governor lias sent a cablegram to the Colonial Offico thanking the French Government for valuable assistance rendered by their warship Duchatfault to H.M.S. Ringarooma. A Rich Gold Discovery. Sydney, This Day. A rich gold discovery has been made near Tenierfield, 314 miles north of Sydney, a piece of stone twelve inches square taken from a claim showing half a pound of gold. Slugs of five and ten ouaces have been picked up in the vicinity.

A Determined Strike. Brisbane, This Day. A ballot at three important shearing centres decided by two to one to continue the strike. Attempted Incendiarism. Brisbane, This Day. A determined attempt was mad** last night to destroy by fire the business portion of Rockhampton. Seven incendiary fires were discovered within a radius of 200 yards and extinguished. In one instance the perpetrator was seen making off, but was not captured. A Total Wreck. Hobart, This Day. The steamer Devon struck on the bar while entering Maoquarie Harbour and became a total wreck. The erew and pasxengsrs were landed safely.
