Received 6.15 p,i«. Shipping. Sydney, July 29. Arrived ye*sterday Rotomahana and Mararoa from Auckland ; sailed— Hauroto for Wellington. Arrived—Tasmania, from Auckland. The Acaoia, bound from Thames to Melbourne, put in here to renew supplies arid repair damage sustained in a hurricane while crossing. The water tank was destroyed and the crew were put on short allowance ; what water they had was muddy. Australian Football. Sydney, July 29. In the football match, New South Wales defeated Queensland by 20 points to 12. Melhoitink, July 29. In the football match under Rugby rules between New South Wales and Victoria, the latter won by ii points to nil. Received 11.20 a.m.
Legislative Council Appointments.
Sydney, This day. It is reported the l'romier is in conflict w r ith the Government over Legislative Council appointments. Sir R. Duff declines to appoint more than three or four out of a dozen suggested, but Sir G. Dibbs claims the right to make the appointment, although he has intimated he intends to resign. The Premier has cabled to the Marquis of Ripon directing his attention to the Governor’s action. A Denial. Melbourne, This day. Mr Reid denies he informed the Hawaiin Government of the intention of the English Government to seize Ncoka Island. Shipping. Newcastle, This day. Sailed—Taieri for Lyttelton.
