Killed by Tobacco. Avckla.ni>, This Pay. An the inquest on Eric McCul- | son of the manager of the Ba»k j of New South Mai**, the evidence | showed that the boy was taken to ! James Beard, a hydropathic prac- j titioner, who diagnosed the case and j prescribed for worms an injection of tobacco nicotine, one ounce to 2J pints of water. After two injections the boy died. Prs Lindsay and Gor- j don, who made tho post mortem, ; declared all the organs were healthy and there was no trace of worms. They condemned Beard’s treatment, and said they had never heard in modern practice of tobacco being used j in Nek a way co>- meh a purpose. A drachm would have been equally as fatal ai a mixture of deadly poison. Beard said ht had intended a drachm, ami could not say whether his assistant wrote down an ounce in mistake. The jury brought in a verdict of death through an injection of tobacco. Taranaki beat Auckland. Auckland, This Pay. Taranaki defeated Auckland in tho football match by 11 points to nil. Supposed Suicide. Napier, This day. Mark Mitchell, a settler, of Hastings, is missing and is believed to have committed suicide while suffering from melancholia. Mitchell was found in ■ v a sheep pool at Fremiey station slid when rescued was very ill. Whilst being conveyed to Napier he must have slipped out of tho vehicle during the night, which was dark ; every * search was made but he could not bo found. It is believed that Mitchell, overcome by melancholia, got out of the ambulance at the Pakowhai bridge and threw himself into the river.
