The Mangatainoka Bridge.
(By Telegraph i
(From Our Parliamentary Correspondent). Wellington, This Day. Cra Job Vile, Keohan and Wakeman, waited as a deputation Lorn the Pahiatua Borough Council on the Premier yesterday, with reference to the proposed bridge over the Mangatainoka river and were introduced by Mr Hogg. They stated the Council was prepared to erect a bridge, but were obstructed by the Cnunty Counoil who objected to the site shown. The deputation, therefore, asked under the power conferred by the Public Works Act, 1889. that a site should be proclaimed and vested in thn Borough Council. The Premier stated the application could not be considered until the whole of the local authorities concerned were consulted. The Borough Counoil would have to submit a request in writing and he would then ask the County Council to give their votes oa tht subject. Having obtaind thn nncesssary data and opinion of both sides he would be able to give his decision ; subsequently the deputation interviewed the Engineer-in-Chief on the same subject. The plane of the eeheme proposed by Mr Carr were submitted together with reports on the proposed work. Mr Hales strongly advised the Council to abandon their proposal to divest the river into a different channel, pointing out the danger through the shingle washing away, and the river encroaching on the banks. He recommended them instead of trying to confine the river nnd erecting the bridge at a cost of £I6OO to construct a bridge of longer capacity across the river-bed including the new and old channels. This would cost £BOOO, but would be a permanent job, and he had no doubt the work would prove satisfactory. He also gave the deputation some valuable information on the sub ject of the river protection works. The deputation promised to place the recommendation before the Borough Council. The Postmastor-Genoral, replying to Mr Hogg yesterday, stated that the extension of the telephone to Makuri would oost £7OO and a loss of £4O a year, on working was anticipated. If the settlers would contribute £199 sufficient to meet four years, anticipated loss, a telephone office would be estabj iished next year when the bsidge over the Tiraumea was erected. Tbe application (or a daily iLfiil to Makuri , xih Le favorably considered.
