The Clutha License Case.
Dunedin, Thi» day.
Judge Williams gave judgment in the Clutha wholesale license case, the motion being for a writ to quash the license* granted to hawkers in districts where the prohibition vote was recorded. The Judge sof opinion Section 14 prohibited the granting of this license and ordered a writ to be issued. Ten guineas costs were allowed against McKenzie, the person who was granted the license. Burial of Rewi. Auckland, This day. Rewi was buried in a grave eight feet deep at the foot of the monument. The Rev Hiraki Paul read the service. A blank volley was fired by the natives who threw into the grave all the old chief's personal effects. Municipal Conference. Wellington, This day. At the Municipal Conference it was decided after considerable discussion that councils may take over existing streets not less than forty feet wide. Two motions relative to closing streets when dangerous, and the inspection of dairies were put aside, as sufficient power already existed. The Committee brought up a report on the Municipal Corporations Bill, recommending the Association should offer no objection to the reduction of the maximum votes from three to two if a portion of clause 2 of the Bill were struck out ; that the Council should have power to prohibit a dairy in : ,nv locality likely to effect the surrounding properties injuriously. That power be given councils •ts do sanitary work for owners and provide appliances on certain conditions; that penalties under the Public Health Aets and part 1 of the Police Offenders Act should form part of the borough fund; that votes of dead and absent burgesses be deducted from voting on special loans.
Fatal Fire in Auckland. Auckland, This Day. Burton's Royal hotel, Hamilton, was completely destroyed by fire at 2 a.m. A servant, named Bella Coghlan, who slept over the kitchen in which the fire started, was burned to death, only a few bones being found among the ruins. A stableman narrowly escaped a similar fate, but was rescued pluckily by an Insurance agent named Black, who dragged him out of the room and carried him downstairs. The girl was heard streaming for help but it was impossible to reach her though BlAck tried hard. The insurances are; building £7OO, National ; stock and furniture, £6OO in New Zealand.
