Sir G. R. Dibbs has decided to contest the Tainworth seat at the general election. Sir H. Parkes will probably oppose him. Exemplary Sentences. Sydney, April 22. Lees and Grimes, charged with causing the death ef the Chinaman who jumped from the train through fear of them, hae been convicted. Lees was sentenced to 14 years and Grimes to 10 years. Eight Hours Demonstration. Melboubne, April 22. The eight hours demonstration was interfered with through wet weather. Hie Governor was present at tha banquet in the evening. Bir B. O'Loughlin, in reply to the toast of of the Government, said the Government would not allow any village settlement to be a failure, and he hoped the bonks would encourage the people to enter npon reproductive works, lending money at cheaper rates than at present.

The schooner Mary Warner has foundered off Batterman Bay, but fortunately the crew reached the shore in safety. The hull is insured in the South British Insurance Coy. for £750.

Sydney, This day. A new political organisation, called the Land Owners' Defence League, has been formed in opposition to the Single Tax Party.
A Split in the Camp.

The split between the Labor party inside auti outside of Parliament is becoming more identified. Several of the former have signed the requisite pledge while the others resent it.
A Doubtful Proposal.
Melbourne, This day.
The Rev. M. Marshall, of Scots Church, suggests the initiation of a crusade against gambling, and in order to diminish betting, advocates the introduction of totalisators. He also says good would result if the leading newspapers would combine in refusing to publish betting quotations.

Adelaide, This day. A train run over a cab on the Port Adelaide line, the driver being killed and two of the occupants fatally injured.

Two men, one an Indian and the other a local resident, have been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the murder of the Frenchman Possit. They were detected pawning some of the victim’* jewellery. Narrow Escape. llobakt, Thi* day. Lord Gormanston, tha Governor, had a narrow escape of losing his life while on a visit to the Lakes distriot. He mistook the nature of the ground and sank in reeds up to his armpits, but the constable held him up till assistance was procured. The Norweg an Whaler. Hobakt, This day. The Norwegian whaler Antartic has put 'nto harbor to make arrangements for shipping her take of oil to Kngland. She does not begin her cruise to the south of New Zealand until July.
