(From our own Correaoondenl) Makakahi. Tuesday. The concert in aid of the children’s treat was supposed to come off on Monday night. As only two of the vocalists appeared the concert was abandoned and a dance took place. About 20 couple made things merry till about 1 a.m. In me afternoon tbe children were entertained at a tea in tbe school, and seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. was surrounded by fire and only saved bv dint of great exertion. At one time tho felt under the iron roof was on fire. As soon a* it was discovered a f w sheets of iron were ripped off, and it was extinguished. Mr Beach, on the Rock Rood, had a whare burnt, and nearly every settler had a considerable quanttty of grass destroyed. Happily the rain which was so much needed fell during the night, and has continued till now. It has extinguished the fires, and will do a great deal of good. Jas. Cox, driver of the evening coach, informed me that he had tho greatest difficulty in getting from Makakahi to Hawera, the horses refusing to face the smoke and heat.
