Athletic Notes.

Bt “ Escapadr.” Athletes engaged at the Makuri sports are reminded that the acceptance for the handicap events close on Wednesday next at 8 p.m. Should next Saturday prove fine, real good sports should be witnessed at both Makuri and Hawera. The handicaps for Hawera will most likely appear in the same issue as these notes. 1 understand that a recent winner of several big handicaps in New South Wales will take part. Owing to the numerous nominations for Hawera I expect the handicapper will have his work cut out. I understand that Ernest Crosbie will challenge the winner of the Makuri Handicap to run over the three distances, the w nner of the said handicap to start from the mark allotted him in the big event at Makuri, the challenger to start from scratch. The running track on the Athletie Society’s ground presents an animated appearance every evening, there being about a dozen runners on the track at the one time, most ol whom are engaged for the 17th inst. A number of maiden runners are also to be teen doing their “ prelim." What hae become of the boys’ sports this year ? The youths should have their " day out" as well aa their elders. It seems a pity that Easter Monday should pass by without seeing “our boys" measuring strides.
