Received 11.16 a.m. Sti>net, This day. Mr John Kidd, Postmaster General, is not opposed to the Pacific cable, but he cannot support Mr Standford Fleming’s schemes which he considers are impracticable. Any practicable ides, he says, will have his warmest support and assistance. Referring to Mr McKenzie Rowell’s statement that a conference to consider the Pacific cable question would be held in June he saya the Government know nothing about it. It was, however, understood, that a conference would be convened for the sole purpose of discussing matters relating to the Pacific cable and the Vancouver mail subsidy. He does not think the Government are likely to agree to combine questions of general trade with political matters which are now* sought to be introduced at the conference. Adelaide, This day. In consequence of defying a byelaw against procession a force of sixty troopers dispersed another attempted demonstration yesterday, arresting two of the leaders and seizing a banner. The unemployed however assembled at Fore hill, where several inflammatory speeches were delivered. One leader incited the men to take possession of St. Peters’ Cathedral, but better counsel prevailed, and the demonstration was pi evented. Received 1.60 a.m. Stdnbt, Feb. 18. Arrived—Tasmania from Auckland. Sailed—On Saturday, Tenan for Auckland. Th# new* constitution for trades unionism whiehyras adopted by the Ballarat conference in 1891 providing for district councils, provincial councils, and an Australian council has been adopted by Queensland, and has made considerable progress here. It will become a serious menace to the existnee of trades and labor councils as certain unions have already withdrawn, causing a diminution of trade council funds.
