Fire at Wanganni.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, January 27. A fire occurred in Victoria avenue at 3 o'clock thus morn tug, and damaged five shops—those of Messrs Fenton (hatter), Hannah (bootmaker), Oatenby (chemist), Tustin (painter), John Anderson (furniture wsrehouse). The fire broke out in Fenton's shop, and travelled up the staircase, communicating with marvellous rapidity with the upstairs portion and the ad joining buildings. The Fire Brigade worked well, and all danger was averted within half-an-hour of the alarm being given. It is fortunate that there was no wind, or the whole block must have been consumed. With the exception of Fenton’s premises, which were gutted, the other damage is mostly through the charring of tho upstairs portions, and the deluge of water poured on the flames The insurances are :—Anderson's stock—New Zealand, £BSO ; Alliance, £250 ; Pbamx, £BOO ; Northern, £IOO. The stock was valued at nearly £OOOO, and the damage is estimated at £ISOO. Ihe New Zealand Company has £l5O reinsurance in the South British. Hannah and Co.— £2ooo in the Straits Settlement office, and £6OO in the New Zealand Company.
