SoMt. time ago we urged that owing to the inconveniences of existing arrangements an effort should be made by the Pahiatua storekeepers to have the weekly half-holiday kept up on Wednesday afternoons instead of Thursdays. The desirableness of the change was, at the time, readily admitted, but it was urged against it that owing to the regular stock sales being fixed for Wednesday afternoons, a change at that time would bo impolitic. Since the end of the year, however, the auctioneers, recognising the wish of the community, have altered their saledays from Wednesdays to Tuesdays in order to allow the weekly half-holiday to fall on the former day. There the matter has so far been allowed to rest and no organised effort lias been made to have the holiday changed. As we have before pointed out Pahiatua, in the matter of its holiday arrange ments, stands quite apart from the neighboring towns—a fact which bain a marked degree militated against the success of different branches of sport in this centie. M ere the da) changed so that it might couie into line with those of Woodvillo and Palme ston a much freer intercourse would be induced betwien the various athletic bodies in these places and in numberless other ways the change would be of distinct advantage. We hope, now that the auctioneers have set the lead, that the matter will bo taken up, and the opportunity of a .‘■Lange taken advantage of.
