It is reported that a serious deficit has been discovered in the benevolent fund of the Masonic Lodges. When the various Lodges amalgamated nunder the title of the I’nited Grand Lodge, four constitutions dissolved and went into liquidation, which was of a very dilatory character. In one case the liquidator found a deficit of fully £IOOO. This announcement has created somewhat of a sensation. (Received 11. In a.in.) Sydney, This Day. The bakers have taken concerted action and decided to raise the price of bread one farthing the two pound loaf. The Government has decided that money advanced by it to certain country towns for water works must lie paid forthwith, aud in one or two instances writs have been issued for the purpose of compounding rates. As none of the Governments except the Victorian have shown any disposition to fall in with the Canadian Conference the Government has decided, if possible, to send Mr Read, Minister for Defence, to America to represent Victoria. Mr Read would beeininently suited to act as delegate, being a leading commercial man and a prominent member of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. Should he go, ami Cabinet decide to obtain a general manager of railways from America, he will ho empowered to make a selection. A. -I. Body, a New Zealand cyclist, has obtained a place in the final heat of the Australian whcelrace, which will he run next Saturday. The five mile bicycle championship race of Australia was won by Broadbent, of Victoria. Time, 14min lit sec. Received 11 .HO a.m.
Melbourne, This Day. Three men, armed and masked, entered the residences of two bootmakers and compelled them to disgorge their valuables. They obtained about £OOO in cash and jewellery. An agreement has been signed with regard to the defence of King George's Sound. Western Australia is to pay one fsurth of the cost, and New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland will pay the balance in proportion to population. Adelaide, This Day. lion.
