Vehicles were constantly plying and every available ratepayer was looked up. The heavy polling was a necessary result of this activity. Towards the time for dosing the Isioth voters came in a little faster and at <i o'clock very few of the ratepayers in town had fail,si to register their votes. Shortly before seven o'clock the returning officer, Mr Kennedy, appeared and announced the poll as follows : George Harold Smith ... 96 Job Vile ... ... ... 69 Informal ... ... 1 The result showing so large a majority was quite unexpected.
