The Mayoral Election.
At any other time the annual election of Mayor would have excited general public interest, but this year the mutter was entirely overshadowed by the general elections. The public had not properly recovered their equilibrium of mind, aud on Wednesday the general polling and its results was still the on absorbing topic of conversation. Nevertheless friends of the candidates were interesting themselves, and particularly in the case of Mr Smith's support,-rs strenuous efforts were made to get every likely voter to the poll. Vehicles were constantly plying and every available ratepayer was looked up. The heavy polling was a necessary result of this activity. Towards the time for dosing the Isioth voters came in a little faster and at <i o'clock very few of the ratepayers in town had fail,si to register their votes. Shortly before seven o'clock the returning officer, Mr Kennedy, appeared and announced the poll as follows : George Harold Smith ... 96 Job Vile ... ... ... 69 Informal ... ... 1 The result showing so large a majority was quite unexpected. Cheers were immediately given for the successful and unsuccessful candidates and the small gathering assembled to hear the declaration quickly dispersed.
