Masterton News.

(From our own Correspondent.)

Masterton, Thursday. The weather here for the past week has been extremely wet and miserable. All out-door work is suspended, and many are wishing for the bright sun to again make its appearance. 'Hie enrolment of electors is going on apace, and great numbers of the female sex are sending in their papers. This is mainly due to the action of the two newspapers, who have circulated as insets through their journals the electoral forms. Things political seeiu to he stirring up somewhat. Mr C. A. Row nail, of Masterton. Im* announced his intention of eontesting the South Wairarapa seat against Mr W. C. Buchanan. It is also on the cards that Mr G. A. Fuirbrother, of Carterton, will be a candidate in the Liberal interests. I fancy that the gallant “ King of Tupurupuru " has but little to fear if two Liberal candidates take the held against him. Mr Buchanan has too good a stronghold in squulterdom to be defeated by any weak candidates. For the Masterton seat it is rumoured that Mr H. S. Wardell. for many years occupying the Bench at the R.M. Court lu n . and who is now relieving Magistrate, intends coming forward in the Conservative interest.

A Masterton resident who attended the sale of one of the travelling showmen a short while ago, was talked into giving the said showman a pound for the asking, along with a number of other foolish person, who at the time must have had more money than sense. In return the showman made him a present of what he termed a valuable watch, saying that it was the cheapest pound’s worth that he had ever got in his life. The watch is r.ow kept as a memento and is adorning the wall of the kitchen of the purchaser, with a two inch nail driven through the centre of it. If tlie loan of £'.‘lo.ooo is carried for the prop«>scd water and drainage scheme for the town, the increase in the rates will be thirteen-pence in the pound. The rates now »tand at Is Id iu the £.

The horse parade held yesterday, under the hu-pc ••* of the Mitsiertou A. and P. Association, was :i failure, on account of the inclement weather, It was decided that another parade be held o«; Saturday next.
