MENTAL DEFECTIVES

QUESTION OF STERILISATION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, May- 4. Sir Hilton Young, Minister of Health, announces that he has decided on a preliminary investigation by an expert committee of the scientific issues involved in the sterilisation of mental defectives. He will shortly settle the personnel of the committee and the precise terms of reference. There is a new realisation of the part which mental defect plays in causing crime, destitution, and disease. He made the statement _ when opening Hortham Colony, near Bristol, as a certified institution for mental defectives, the first of its kind in the country. This colony, which has cost £210,000, has accommodation for 600 patients.
