RUGBY, June 15. The Wimbledon lawn tennis championships will begin on Alonday, and there is, as usual, a large international entry. Two Englishmen (Perry and Austin), three Americans (Vines, Shields and Wood), two Frenchmen (Coehet and Borotra), and one Australian (Cranvford) have been entered for the Alen’s Singles, while in the Women’s Singles there are three English players, two Americans (Airs Helen Wills-Moody and Miss Jacobs), two from France (AHla Payot and Aladam Alathieu), and one from Germany (Fraulein Brahwinkel). As usual the championships are attracting many visitors from abroad. QUEEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP LONDON, June 15. The sensation at the Queen’s Club championship was Hopman's brilliant defeat of the American champion, Vines, 9—6, 6—2, 6 —3. The Australian discovered that Vines thrived on speed and so varied his pace cunningly. Vines showed surprising deficiency in trying to volley Hopman’s soft shots. The critics say that the Australian’s game was the finest of anything seen in the present season.

In the third round Crawford beat Henderson, 6 —l, 6—l; Clemenger beat Taylor, G—l, 6 —o; and Kuwahara beat Sproule, 6 —3, 6—l. June 16. In the fourth round Gandar Dower beat Hopman 7 —5, 3—G, 6—3; Timmer beat Clemenger 6 —4, 6—l; Crawford beat Kuwahara 6—4, G—3. June 17. In the semi-final Crawford (Australia) beat Satoh, 5 —7, 6 —4, 6 —3. CRAWFORD WINS SINGLES. LONDON, June IS. In the final of the Singles Crawford beat Timmer, I—6, 6—3, 6—3, 6—4. THE REMAINING FINALS. LONDON, June IS. In the Doubles Crawford and Hopman beat Aliki and Satoh, 6—4, 6—l, 6 —l. In the Alixed Doubles Miki and Aliss Round beat Crawford and Airs Crawford, 6—4, I—6, B—6. In the Women’s Doubles Airs Alitchell and Aliss Round beat Airs Harper and Aliss Palfrey, 6 —o, 6—3. In the Women’s Singles Airs Burke (United States) beat Aladame Jedrzejowska (Poland), I—6, 7 —5, 6—4. After his defeat of Vines, the American Davis Cup player, Hopman would greatly disappoint his supporters by going down to K. C. Gandar Dower, who is only ranked 3Sth in an unofficial English ranking list. Gandar Dower, who was born in London in 1908, has played for Cambridge Diversity for the past four years and in partnership with C. E. Alalfroy, the New Zealander, he has had a number of notable successes, including victories over Shields and Wood (tlie Americans) 6—3, 3—6, 6—2, and Raymond and Spence (South Africa) 6—4, 6—B, 5—7, 6—l, 6—4. Gandar Dower had a very successful season in 1930 when he gained singles victories over Oliff, Alalfroy, Aliki, Powell and Timmer. He and Hopman have met on two occasions and he has won both matches.

T. Kuwabara, who defeated Sproule and then went down to Crawford, is the present champion of Japan. This was a good victory on the part of Crawford and indicates that the Australian No. 1 player should be at the top of his form at Wimbledon next week. H. Timmer, who beat Clemenger, has been champion of Holland on several occasions and has represented his country in the Davis Cup competition since 1924.
