PAKAPOO SCHOOL
CHINESE HEAVILY FINED AUCKLAND, April 7. The three Chinese who were arrested last night in a house raided by the police in Grey avenue were fined £lOO each today for using the premises as a common gaming house. Detective Sergeant Kelly said that eight pakapoo banks were daily drawn in this house. “ This street.” he said, “is going to become a second Haining street unless something is done to stop these Chinese. Last night there was a large crowd present during the raid. They jeered at the police and some threw bricks at the house while the police were in it.” Defending counsel said that as regards the wickedness of pakapoo, one would have to be a mental acrobat to. make these Chinese appreciate the wickedness of gambling in such a country as this. The magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt) said that pakapoo playing would have to stop. He had fined the last lot of offenders £5O. This time he would double the fine, in default three months’ imprisonment.
