THE WOOL TRADE RECOVERY DEPENDENT ON WORLD CONDITIONS. WELLINGTON T , April 4. No improvement in the wool market till world conditions become better is anticipated by Mr George Jeffrey, a former South Australian wool expert, who arrived by the Monowai to-day from the United States. He said the trouble waa a want of buying power. The American sheep farmers were in a bad way. Many of them were financed by local banka which had failed. The probability was that America’s production of wool would drop, and thus the Australian and New Zealand markets would be increased, America was in a bad way. and was just starting to go through what Australia had gone through.

Oats. —The activity in this market is etill maintained, due to the general scarcity of oats in the producing districts. Millers are still operating freely, and a considerable amount of business has been passing on the basis of f.o.b. values, 3s 4d B grade Gartons. 3s 6d A’s. but the latter are in distinctly short supply. However, for milling purposes, Southland is able to cope with the position, as though hardly up to B grade in colour, the weight ot the oats is rather nominally high, and socalled undergrade quite fit for milling purposes, commanding the same price as B’s, are weighing 431 b to 451 b per bushel Millers, unlike retailers, are more interested in colour, paying more attention to weight and quality. Ryegrass.—Not many offerings are being made by growers, and the bulk of these appear in the meantime to be more inclined to hold in the hope of securing better prices later. A good bulk of seed hag nevertheless changed hands, and much of it has been railed to Dunedin and Canterbury cleaning sales. Values for machine-dressed seed between merchants are on the basis of 5s 6d for 261b-271b seed, 281 b to 301 b seed 5s 9d to 6s, these prices depending on the actual weight, germination, and purity. Chewing’s Fescue. —Growers are finding it rather difficult to dispose of their yield as merchants are finding it somewhat difficult to do business overseas. The market as between merchants is nominally from 6Jd for light-weight to 7jd per lb for heavy-weight machine-dressed seed, with a shade better figures for extra choice lots specially suitable for the high-class overseas business. OAMARU MARKETS OAMARU, April 8. A fair quantity of wheat has been offering during the week, the quality of which has been very-satisfactory, several lines being purchased for seed purposes at prices above the ruling milling rates. Some of the lines coming forward ■ are showing signs of the effect of the weather, being sprouted, but these have been accepted by millers at ruling rates. A few lines of oats have been offering. For good quality suitable for seed, up to 3s 3d has been paid. Ordinary feed Gartons are commanding 2s 10d to 3s on trucks.
