OTTAWA CONFERENCE
INDIA TO BE REPRESENTED LONDON, February 8. In the House of Commons Sir Samuel Hoare (Secretary for India) announced that India would be represented at the Ottawa Conference. NO PETTY BARGAINING. OTTAWA, February 8. Speaking in the House of Commons in the debate on the Speech from the Throne, the Liberal and Opposition Leader (Mr Mackenzie King), in referring to the forthcoming economic conference, said: “In all sincerity we on this side of the House will do what we can, so far as our point of view permits, to make the conference the great success we all hope it will be.” He believed, however, that the Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Bennett) would have to change his point of view in regard to trade, his methods, and finally his policy, if the conference were to bring forth fruits. He did not believe in approaching the conference with the idea of indulging in petty or blustering bargaining. If it was approached in this spirit he thought it would lead towards disruption. ARGENTINA’S DESIRE ATTENDANCE OF OBSERVER. OTTAWA, February 11. The Department of External Affairs declares that Argentina desires to attend the Imperial Conference. It would be a departure from practice to permit an observer from a non-British country to attend, but if the Argentine desires to make application the request will be submitted to the Imperial countries.
