MOTOR ASSOCIATION FUNDS
POSSIBILITY OF TAXATION. CHRISTCHURCH, February 11. The danger of the Government taxing the surplus funds of motor associations and clubs throughout New Zealand was brought to the notice of the executive of the South Island Motor Union to-night by a letter received from the North Otago Association. This letter stated that the association had been requested by the Commissioner of Taxes to forward a copy of its profit and loss account and balance sheet, and the South Island Motor Union suggested that a reply be sent to the commissioner stating that the association was not a trading concern, but merely a voluntary organisation, run by subscriptions for the benefit of members and motorists in the district. The reply continues: “I therefore beg respectfully to decline your request for any accounts or balance sheet, and I might also say that any attempt to make a raid on the funds of this association by the Taxing Department will be resisted.” It was also decided to take up the matter with the North Island Motor Union.
