THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING OTAGO COMPETITORS PROMINENT. WELLINGTON, January 22. In glorious weather the New Zealand Amateur Junior and Intermediate Swimming Championships were opened in the Riddiford Baths at Lower Hutt to-day, and were continued in the evening. There was a fair attendance of visiting competitors, who praised the baths. Some with wide experience them to be the finest open-air baths in New Zealand. On the day’s events, for the War Memorial Shield, Otago took the lead with three points. Canterbury being next with two, and Manawatu and Auckland one each. BACK STROKE RECORD BROKEN. NEW YORK, January 17. Mies Eleanor Holm set a new world record for the 150 Yards Back Stroke, 2min 33 2-ssec. WORLD'S RECORD BROKEN. SYDNEY, January 19. Clare Dennis, aged 15, smashed the world's record for 200 metres breaststroke at the Domain Baths by 1 4-ssec. The previous best was 3min 10 2-ssec by Marjorie Hinton, of England. Violet Armstrong broke Dulcie Raines’s State and Australian record for 50 yards freestyle, clocking 28 2-ssec. ANOTHER RECORD TO CHARLTON. SYDNEY. January 24. At the State swimming championships at the Domain Baths in Sydney the 440 Yards Championship resulted as follows: —A. Charlton 1, N. Ryan 2, V. Besomo 3.
