RAILWAY EXCURSION
SUNDAY IN THE CATLINS OVER 300 HOLIDAY-MAKERS. Over 300 people took advantage of the fine weather in Dunedin on Sunday morning to participate in the Railways (Department's excursion to the Catlins trict. The journey, a fairly long one, was accomplished without loss of time, th» passengers alighting at Owaka (the. nearest railway connection with Pouuawea), Maclennan (where the Papatowai Beach, rimmed with luxuriously flowering rata, offered an attraction to many), and Tahakopa (where the balance of the excursionists found keen pleasure in the picturesque bush scenery). The holidavmakers arrived at their various destinations in plenty of time for lunch, and a supply of hot water and milk where needed reduced the tea-making to a mere formality. Although the promise of a fine day was not fulfilled, the occasional showers by no means spoilt the enjoyment of the day. Through eliminating unnecessary stops and making a fairly fast trip of it, the Railways Department was able to give the excursionists fully five hours in which to enjoy themselves from the time they left the train until they boarded it again. The return journey was completed a little after 9.30 p.m. The excursion was under the direciton of-Mr Mackay, assistant traffic manager.
