Whenever the retailers begin to place orders with the wholesalers after a period in which they have been unwilling to buy, it is always accepted as an indication of a better feeling among the buying public. This is one of the signs that has been noted with relief by some of the large firms in a northern city in the past week or two. A representative of one firm said last week that some factories had sufficient orders to keep their present staffs busy until after the New Year. This was in contrast with the position towards the end of last year, when holidays were being extended and manufacturers were taking a gloomy view of things. “ Now we feel that we are getting around the corner,” he said. “The retailers are buying again, though somewhat cautiously, and the improvement which began in the factories some weeks ago has been continued.”
