While fishing a quiet English lake at about 5 o'clock one afternoon, a few months ago, Mr E. F. Stead, who has just returned to Christchurch from a tour of England, heard, under the most favourable conditions, the song of a nightingale. He told the Christchurch Press the other day that he was satisfied, however, that the song of the nightingale could not compare with the songs of the New Zealand tuis and bcllbirds.
