Estates certified for stamp duty for the first eight mouths of 1931 were of the value of £8.871.943, of which 64 were ot £20,444 and over, totalling £2,318,157. There were 1340 estates of the value ot under and up to £5OO, and these totalled £278,370. The rain and warm weather have resulted in a large amount of grass and weeds appearing on the earth and clay which fell when the great Bluff Hill slide occurred, a considerable portion of the face being now well covered with green (says the Napier Telegraph). Another noticeable feature is the return of a large number of pigeons to the scene of their old haunts, where they are busily engaged in establishing new homes on what is left of the face of the bluff.

“ I like to encourage "iris to speak in public-.’’ said Miss V. M. Greig, head mistress of the Wellington Girls’ College (to a Dominion reporter) referring to the annual speech competition held at the college. *' When I went to America and saw how easily and freely the women spoke there I felt rather ashamed to think how backward we are—just at a time, too, when women are beginning to take the lead in so many directions. That is why I started the speech competition at Napier, where I was for some years, and now we have it here every year’. Girls must learn to speak in public if they are going to play their part in public affairs, and in business, and this is one way of encouraging them to do so.”
