BANKING AVERAGES

A DECREASE IN DEPOSITS REDUCTION IN ADVANCES. WELLINGTON, October 8. The banking returns for the September quarter reveal a further fall in Government deposits and in the demand or free deposits. Government deposits are down by £905,314 compared with the corresponding quarter of last year, and the free deposits have decreased by £4,212,510. The fixed deposits have increased by £2,433,288. The Government deposits total £2,694,786, the free deposits total £16,590,661, and the fixed deposits total £34,180,511. The advances have decreased by £1,175,836, the total being £50,224,004. The d’scounts totalled £709,553 compared with £1.107,061. The note circulation has contracted from £6,039,175 to £5.584,542. The coir and bullion totals £6,942,332.
