At a time when all Pacific Islands produce has fallen off a great deal, both as regards production and profits, the banana industry is to some extent helping Western Samoa to tide over a lean period. Instead of attempting to cut greater quantities of copra to make the money- necessary’ for his accustomed luxuries, the Samoan is in many cases turning to the much more profitable banana. In spite of extremely bad conditions early in the year, when nearly all crops were blown down by severe storms, the trees are once again flourishing as luxuriantly’ as ever. At the present time Samoa is exporting more bananas than Fiji.
