In honour of Rear-admiral Blake, and the officers of H.AI.S. Diomede, some of whom have left New Zealand since, it was given at the Adelphi Cabaret, and masses of lovely flowers were used to supplement the usual tasteful decorations. Rhododendrons, camellias, branches of cherry blossom, and spring bulbs were used, and in the corners of the dance hall were groups of arum lilies and feathery greenery. A “ winter garden ” was made, and was a delightful place for those who were sitting out. Part of the success of the dance might have been traced to the dancing the lancers, which began the programme. Alany had only partly remembered them, and the efforts to keen up with the nTusic made for merriment all the time. This certainly broke up any stiffness, and set the pace of jollity, which prevailed all the evening. A polka followed later, and was a revelation to those who had experienced only the “ trotty ” American dances which need so little exertion. However, there were many who knew the dance, while others tried it. with very varying success. The official lancers was danced by Lady Norah Jellieoc. Airs AA. Perry, Airs J. Findlay,-Lady Alyers, Airs Frazer, Airs Grant-Dalton, Airs P. Alarshall, Airs A’. Boyle, who were partnered by Rear-admiral Blake. Sir John Hanham. Commander Crutchlev. Alajorgeneral Sinclair-Burgess. Air AA’. Perry (president of the AA’ellington Navy League), Captain J. S. G. Fraser. R.N.. Squadron-leader T. Al. AA’ilkes. and Air AA’alker. Among those present were Lady Buckleton and her daughter. Lady Roberts, Alcsdames AA’. H. Bremner. GrantDalton. J. T. AA’ebster, C. C. Aliles. and D. C. Peacock, and Alisses C. A’oung. Booth. P. Farewell parties have been given recently in honour of Airs Ben Bayless, and she herself was hostess at one to which many friends were invited. Air and Mrs Bayless with their two young sons arc leaving by the Niagara on'their return to America, and will be much missed by AA’ellington friends. Their party was given at the Palm Lounge at the Hotel St. George, which was attractively decorated with Iceland poppies, cherry blossom and other flowers. The tea tables were arranged in tones of yellow and mauve, and an excellent tea was served. Airs Calvin Hitch and Mrs Kulm received the guests with Mrs Bayless, the latter wearing an em-

broidered black chiffon frock and a- baku straw hat. _ Airs Hitch was in black lace, and Airs Kuhn in floral chiffon. Among those present were Alesdames J. B. MacEwan, B. Ahl, E. Kaula, AV. AA’atson, G. Alorgan, Hallard, B. Gotlieb, Formichella, Prevost. Triughanu J. Foster, P. AA’ard, A. Tennent. B. Nagle, and others. Air and Mrs Erreld Alartin gave a picture party followed by a dance as a farewell to Air and Airs Bayless, this being a particularly pleasant party too. at which many friend's had the chance of bidding farewell to the popular guests of honour. The English-Speaking Union, which has been very active this winter, gave a very pleasant luncheon party at Kirkcaldie’s Jacobean Room recently in honour of Judge Collyer, of Chicago. a visitor to New Zealand. The tables were daintily decorated with Iceland poppies and maidenhair fern, and there was a good attendance of members to make a “ friendly gesture ” to the visitor. Judge Collyer was cordially welcomed by the chairman, Air A. Leigh Hunt, who spoke briefly of the aims and objects of the E.S.U.. emphasising the fact that while Great Britain and America stood firmly for peace in the world, there was little likelihood of war. Judge Collyer, who has a nice sense of humour, spoke of his pleasure at finding ladies present. as he had imagined the E.S.U. to be “ only a man show.” However he adjusted his remarks to interest the feminine part of the assemblage, and told of his recent visit to Japan. He was of opinion that the AA r estern women had much to be thankful for in the fact that the divorce lairs were not anything like those which obtain in Japan. There a man has only to go to the nearest street corner and wave his arm. and declare three times that he divorces his unworthy wife—and the thing is done! The wives in Japan, according to the judge have a very “ thin time,” for when they have put a meal be-

fore the great man of the house, they re> tire modestly while he eats it, and what is left is their portion—if any. The judge was of opinion that never anywhere had he seen so many babies as in Japan, they ' simply swarmed everywhere. Altogether it was an informative and pleasant talk. After the lunch many of those present had an opportunity of meeting the guest of honour, who seemed to be making very pleasant impressions, as well as getting them.

Harriers might certainly be expected to be very energetic people, and those who attended the Olympic Harriers’ Club dance had no reason to complain of lack of amusement and pleasantness, as the members had spared no trouble to make it the success it undoubtedly was. There were not so many present as anticipated, but the prevailing epidemic no doubt was responsible for the absence of a good many. However, a most enjoyable evening was spent, and admiration given to the very fine trophies won during the season —especially the one for the 20-mile race—was very hearty. The AI.C.s.. Alessrs Alorris and D. Barn, looked after the guests well, and were responsible for much of the success of the dance. Among those present were Alesdames Seatchard in blue satin; Cainnbell. green floral taffeta; AA orkman. floral georgette: and Briggs, apricot satin: and Alisses E. AA 7 . AUCKLAND, October 8. The Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting was favoured with brilliant weather on both days at Ellerslie, and the gardens at the racecourse showed a most attractive and colourful array of flowers. The new season’s models were well in evidence in the form of tailored suits and light-weight flecked and coloured coats, and the new bowler hats with the feather curling round to the back as well as the coarse straw sailor hats were universally worn. Although there was a large attendance of the public present, the absence of the usual number of visitors from the south was particularly noticeable. Dr and Airs Ambrose Spon" have arrived in Auckland from England on a visit to Afrs Spong’s parents, Air and Airs H. O. Nolan, of Afount St. John avenue. The engagement hag been announced of Betty, eldest daughter of Air and Airs Thornton Jackson, of Remuera, and Peter, only son of Afrs and the late Air R. A. Hol way, of Cardiff. Wales. The presentation of Shakespeare’s “A Alidsummer Night’s Dream ” by pupils of the Diocesan Girls’ High School in their hall has been billed for three performances. The school hall was well filled last evening when the performers, with a large cast of over 24 name parts, in addition to countless numbers of fairies and court attendants, acted in a way that

showed interested and careful preparation. Gwennyth Hill, as Lysander, and Roma Chatfield, as Hermia. were very charming as lovers; Pauline Afitchell wag Puck, Glenise Adams was the lovelorn Helena; and Pat King, as Demetrius, was also loudly applauded. Important parts were also taken by Joan Edwards, as Theseus; Alargaret Lee. as Egeus; Jean Afilne, as Hippolyta; Joyce Howie, as Oberon; June Beale, as Titania; and Peggy Leary, as Bottom, the weaver. Pamela Singer, assisted by a troupe of fairies and sprites, charmingly danced to the strains of the school orchestra. It is universally conceded that this performance was a triumph for the producer, Aliss L. Bruce, and the scenery, costuming, _ and lighting were in manyrespects quite up to ’that of a professional standard. The funds are to be used for the betterment of the playgrounds of the Diocesan School. The seventy-first dedication festival of St. Alary’s Cathedral, Parnell, took place last Sunday-, and large congregations attended the various services. The collection was in aid of the church fund, and in spite of talk of the shortage of money, over £230 was obtained—quite a record!
