RETURN TO THE HORSE

MR E. F. HEALY'S PREDICTION. WELLINGTON, August 20. A speedy return to the horse in preference to mechanical methods of agricultural production in New Zealand was predicted by Mr E. F. Healy (Wairau) in the House of Representatives this evening. Mr Healy mentioned that the largest shipment of New Zealand produce ever exported direct to Manchester had been unloaded purely with the aid of horses. This, he said, showed that in England there was a return to the good old horse, and he believed that if New Zealand farmers had emulated this example there would have been less stagnation. Mr K. S. Williams (Bay of Plenty): Do you want to buy a horse?

Mr Healy: No: but I think it will not be long before the horse will be wanted to a much greater extent than at present. Air M'Combs (Labour member for Lyttelton): Why not go the whole way and get bullocks? Air Healy: I am not antiquated, but our farmers will need to go back to horses.
