THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
WORK OF THE BRANCHES. LAWRENCE. The monthly meeting of the branch was held on August 3, when there was a good attendance of members considering the inclemency of the weather. Mrs Barton occupied the chair and after the business had been dealt with a demonstration of papier mache was given. Following the demonstration a box from the Home Science Extension Service was opened, and from this many useful hints on dyeing were taken. A vote of thanks was accorded Miss i Paterson for her work in hand printing a programme which has been drawn up for the following three months. The roll call for the evening was the < best uses for old newspapers. Many humorous as well as helpful answers were given. A competition for the best article made, something new from something old, was won by Mrs Robertson with a tea cosy; second, Mrs Kennedy, pin cushion; third, Mrs Cox, bowl; and Mrs Stephens, a child’s suit. The programme for next night includes demonstration in Barbola, and the roll i call ’ be hints for washing day or spring cleaning, and a competition will be held for best papier mache and marquetry. After supper had been dispensed a pleasant evening was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. I The hostesses for the evening were Mes- I dames Prisk, Stephens, and Suter, and I Miss Paterson. V. # ¥ PUKEHOMA. The first meeting of the Pukehoma Women’s Institute was held on the evening of July 25, when the president (Mrs R. B. Morgan) presided over a fair attendance of members. The institute song was sung, after which business was dealt with. The following office-bearers were elected to office:—President, Mrs R. B. Morgan; vice-presidents, Mesdames J Park and J. Smith; secretary, Mrs E. Little; treasurer, Miss L. Park; institute accompanist, Mrs George Cochrane; press correspondent, Mrs F. M. Dow; committee —Mesdames S. Purvis, J. Walker, A. Hallum, and G. L. Cunningham. A very interesting programme to cover the next six months has been drawn up, and it has been decided to hold the meetings on the last Saturday of every month at 8 p.m. The remainder of the evening was spent in community singing and items from Miss Hallum and Miss Park (pianoforte solos) and Mrs Park (humorous reading). The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames G. L. Cunningham and F. M. Dow. ¥ ¥ sp CLYDEVALE. The monthly meeting of the Clydevale Women’s Institute was held in the hall on July 30, Mrs Cooksley presiding over a good attendance of members. A visitor from the Taieri Women’s Institute was present. The president read the creed, and after the usual business had been discussed the roll was called and answered by each member giving her idea on “ The Best Use for Old Newspapers.” Later a very instructive talk and demonstration on “ Poultry Dressing ” was given by Mr H. N. Goodman, Greenfield. A crate of goods was received from the Institute of the Blind, Auckland, some of the contents being disposed of . at the meeting, and it was decided to offer the remainder for sale at the birthday social which is to be held on August 19. at 8 p.m. The social halfhour which followed was spent in folk dancing and singing. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Kee, Mac--1 farlane. Geddes, and Pitt. V V V . PAHIATUA. IThe June meeting of the Pahiatua Women’s Institute was attended by over 90 members, Mrs Billman, of Feilding : was present, and gave a very interesting demonstration of paper flower making s and instruction to a large number ' of
members. A musical item was rendered by a member and the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
