RIFLE SHOOTING
KIWI DEFENCE CLUB ~ ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Kiwi Defence Rifle Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. Building ou Tuesday evening. Mr F. J. Silvius (president) occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of members. The balance sheet showed that the receipts during the year totalled £132 2s 3d, and the expenditure £123 4s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £8 18s. On the motion of Mr F. W. Clayton, seconded by Mr C. M'Keich, the report and balance sheet were adopted. Regret was expressed at the coming departure of Mr Silvius for Wellington, and the meeting hoped the best of fortune would follow him in his new home. —The president thanked the members for their kind expressions of goodwill. Officers for the coming year were elected as follow:—Patron, Sir James Allen, M.L.C.; president, Mr R. Bruce; deputy-president, Mr F. W. Clayton; secretary, Mr P. Fennessy; treasurer, Mr J. A. P. Frederic; auditors, Messrs H. Whitehead and W. Ogg; storekeeper, Mr W. Mills; club captain, Mr R. Gillick; press steward, Mr F. W. Clayton.
The following vice-presidents were elected: —Colonel E. R. Smith, Colonel G. Barclay, Major Mead, Dr Evans, Dr Fitzgerald, the Mayor of Dunedin (Mr R. S. Black), Messrs E. J. Denny, G. Newev, J. Rigbv, W. Brinsley, and H. W. Huntly. The committee was appointed as follows: —Messrs R. Gillick, R. Johnston, N. Jones, W. M’Keich, W. Mills, H. Stinson, J. M’K inlay, R. Bowie, H. Whitehead, and A. Baker. Selectors and handicappers were appointed as under:—Messrs R. Johnston, F. W. Clayton, R. Gillick, and R. Bence (ex officio). On tiie motion of the president, seconded by Mr Clayton, Mr F. J. Silvius was elected a life member of the club, and a gold badge of the club was handed to him as a token of the esteem in which he has always been held by members.— Mr Silvius thanked the club for the honour conferred on him. Colonel Frederic expressed the opinion that before long rifle clubs would be more appreciated by the Government than they were at present, because in members of these clubs the country possessed not only volunteers but expert shots. — (Applause.)
