We are strongly of opinion that the scale should bie amended to a basis guaranteeing the grower 4s 9d a bushel, net on trucks, •at country stations. sacks extra, Tuscan, March-April delivery.” It was decided to send copies of the resolution to the Prime Minister and every member of Parliament. LORNEVILLE STOCK SALE INVERCARGILL, August 4. Inere were considerably larger entries o’ both tat sheep and fat cattle at the weekly Lorneville stock sale to-day, but the store sections were very small, and ci id not attract much attention. C i ep ’ - r 4be > y ard ' n g comprised some 1-00 head, and was the largest entry for several weeks, the quality being somewhat mixed, including fair proportions of both good and inferior sorts. With the larger offering it was apparent that the butchers were not prepared to pay the high rates which have ruled during the past fortnight, when supplies have been short, and the market opened at a reduction on last week’s values of about 4s per head. As the sale progressed, however, prices showed a firming tendency, and towards the close of the auction values were about 2s lower than a week ago for best quality and up to 4s for inferior lines. A similar nosition existed in the fat cattle market, where the entry was more than double that of the previous sale, and prices showed a reduction of from 10s to £1 P er head. Promising young dairy heifers were the only sorts in the store cattle section which attracted any attention, and these were in demand, with prices ruling from £5 to £B. Aged ewes comprised a very small entry in the store sheep section, and values were about on a par with recent sales.
GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., report as follows: — Wheat. —Odd lines are still arriving on the market and will continue to do so until the spring threshing is finished. Local millers are not at all keenly interested and samples have to be of good quality before the fixed rate of 5s 10d, f.0.b., for Tuscan and 6s, f.0.b., for Hunters is obtained. Fowl wheat is in greater supply than is usually the case, and good whole wheat is selling ex store at 4s 6d per bushel, sacks extra. Lines not up to good whole standard are difficult to dispose of. Chaff. —There is very little change in this market. The bulk of business passing is being transacted ex store. Any trucks of good, bright quality arriving are generally disposed of ex truck at £4 5s to £4 7s 6d, sacks extra. The same quality ex store is worth £4 10s, medium to £4; inferior, £3 ss; oat straw chaff, £3, sacks extra in each case.
Oats. —The demand from the north for oats of good weight and colour still continue. These are required for seed purposes. Values, however, have so far not responded, and 2s 3d. sacks extra, on trucks, with handy railage, is the ruling value for this class of oat. Ordinary A grade is worth 2s 2d and B grade Is lid; undergrade from Is 6d. A large quantity of the latter is held in store, and, as the feed demand is poor, it will probably be some time before it is disposed of. Potatoes. —The potato this year is certainly not an asset to the farmer. It is many years since values were so low. The local stores are all overstocked, and very little business is passing. Value to-day is £2 10s, sacks in. ex store. The all-round quality of th-; potatoes offering is superior to that of r* y-?ws. Blight is barely noticeable.
ADDINGTON STOCK SALE CHRISTCHURCH, August 5. This week’s market at Addington was the national “ double ” one, and it attracted, as usual, show stock in the fat sections. The display in the fat cattle section was slightly better than for some years, the North Island being strongly represented, as was all the South Island, including the West Coast. Store Sheep.—There was a moderate entry, consisting mostly of ewes of mixed appearance. There was a dragging sale With many passings. Values were:—Good B.m. half and crossbred ewes, 14s to f6s lOd; medium s.m. half and crossbred ewes, 10s to 12s 6d; plain s.m. half and crossbred ewes, 6s to 9d; good six and eighttooth Corriedale ewes, to 16s lOd. Spring Lambs.—There was an entry of 61 head of disappointing quality. The top price was 43s 4d. Other values ranged down to 12s 4d. Fat Sheep.—Th e entry was 5600, which met with a keen sale, with the demand well maintained. There was a consignment of 492 sheep from the North Island. A general advance of Is per head for all classes was experienced. Values were: — Show wethers, to £2 18s; extra prime heavy wethers, 22s to 245; prime, 18s 6d to 21s 6d; medium, 15s to 18s; light. 12s to 14s 6d; show ewes, to 255; extra prime, 19s 6d to 21s 6d; prime heavy, 17s 6d to 19s; prime, 15s to 17s: medium. Special show bullocks made from £36 to £5l; good show bullocks, £2O to £23 17s 6d; extra prime, £l5 to £l7 17s 6d; prime, £ll 10s to £l4 10s; medium weight. £9 to £ll ss; ordinary, £6 15s to £8 15s; rough £5 to £6 10s; show heifers to £l3 7s - 6d; extra prime, to £ll 10s; prime, £8 10s to £11; medium; £6 5s to £S ss; light, £4 to £6; extra prime cows, to £ll 7s 6d; prime, £7 15s to £lO 10s; medium, £6 to £7 10srough cows, £4 to £5 15s, Apart from the show cattle, values per 1001 b ranged up to 30s for primest sorts, 27s to 29s 6d for medium weight, 25s to 27s for heavy weight. Good heifer- beef made to 28s; best cow, 255; medium, 20s to 23s Idrough beef, down to 15s per 1001 b. Fat Pigs.—The entry was of fair size only. Porkers were of good quality, and these met with a fair demand, with prices on a level with those ruling last week. Choppers made from £3 to £8 10s; baconers, 47s 6d to-52s 6d; heavy baconers, 57s 6d to £3 2s 6d; extra heavy baconers. £3 ,14s. 6d. SOUTHLAND MARKETS (From Our Own Correspondent.) . INVERCARGILL, August 8. During the week a fair amount of business has been done with northern houses in A grade Gartons, which are now reduced to further small dimensions. Sales have been made at from 2s 9d, free of commission, to 2 S lOd, f.0.b., s.i., for A grade prompt delivery. Current quotations for B’s are 2s 7Jd; there has, too. been a considerable turnover in so-called undergrades at prices ranging from 2s 6Jd to 2s Bd, the latter being on the basis of the newly-established number one feed. For a line weighing between 431 b and 441 b it is extremely doubtful if there is available for northern centres anything in excess of 1000 sacks of A grade, taking into consideration the quantity which merchants require to retain for seed purposes. In many instances, however, what in established grades would be termed undergrade are being reserved for seed purposes, the oats being of high quality, but a trifle below the colour demanded under the grading system. At prices being paid to growers business with northern centres in chaff is impossible. Pricee to firms are £3 per ton on trucks, growers' sidings, for prime quality, sacks supplied by merchants', lower quality down to £2 15s. i Seeds, up to the time of writing, have been well nigh inactive, and nominal values only can be quoted. Crested dogstail, machine-dressed seed, suitable forexport, at /Ad per lb; machine-dressed ryegrass. 25-261 b seed, 3s 3d; 27-281 b, 3s 6d. Anything in excess of that weight 3s 9d. These prices are based on offers of seed through northern brokers. It is anticipated that there will be some movement in this market with the advent of spring. The stock market for the past week has been very quiet, with small yardings in all sections. Fat cattle are selling better, the market showing a rise due to offerings being much smaller than requirements. Fat sheep are also selling well, values to-day being just on 10s up on those recorded a few weeks back. The store sheep market is life’ess, little or no business being done. Fat Cattle. —Prime heavy bullocks, £9 10s to £11; medium do. £7 10s to £8 10s; prime heavy heifers, £7 to £9 t©s; lighter do, £4 10s to £5 10s; prime heavy cows, £8 to £10; medium do. £5 10s to £7. Fat Sheep.—Prime heavy wethers. 22s 6d to 255; medium do, 18s to 20s; lighter do, 15s to 16s; prime heavy ewes, 18s to 20s; medium do, 14s to 16s; lighter do, 10s to 12s. Store Sheep.—Wether lambs, 6e to 8s; ewe lambs, 12s to 14s; two-tooth ewes, 14s to 16s; four and six-tooth do, 10s to 12s; failing-mouthed ewes, 9s to 10s. Store Cattle.—Three and four-y ear ewes, £6 to £7; two-year do, £4 10s to £5 10s; yearling, £1 10s to £2 10s. OAMARU MARKETS OAMARU, August 7. An exceptionally quiet week has been experienced in grain and produce, and there has been no wheat or oats offering. Owing to the continued dry weather there has been no inquiry for rye or cowgrass. The stock market has also been verj r quiet, and the only private sales recorded were light fat steers, £7 to £9; fat heifers, £6 10s; two-year-old steers, £3 5s 6d; two, three, and four-year-old steers, £6 2s 6d.
