BOXING.

CONDITIONS IN UNITED STATES. WELLINGTON, July 27. A. J. Cleverley and Ted Morgan, two Wellington boxers, returned to-day by the Makura from San Francisco after an eight months’ visit to the United States. Cleverley said he experienced great difficulty in getting matches, which were not controlled by the association, but by managers. Arrangements were made by the managers and if they thought the contestant too good for their “ boy ” there would be no match. With the exception of the top-notchers he considered there were no boxers greatly superior to those in New Zealand. He was rather disappointed in not being able to get more contests. WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIPS. WELLINGTON, July 28. ■ The Wellington Boxing Association’s tournament to decide the amateur champions for 1931 was concluded to-night, when the following were returned as title holders:—Welterweight, T. Arbuthnot; lightweight, H. Thomas; featherweight, G. Marshall; paperweight, F. Finnegan; bantamweight, L. Larsen; middle-weight, L. Strickland; fly-weight, S. Donoghue; lightheavyweight, D. Sjoberg; heavyweight, M. Strickland. The Management Committee of the Wellington Association will decide tomorrow which representatives will be sent to the New Zealand championship meeting at Ashburton.

HEAVY-WEIGHT CONTEST CAMPBELL BEATS O’MALLEY. TIMARU, July 30. A contest for the Australian and New Zealand Heavyweight Professional Boxing Championship took place this even ing between Allan Campbell (New Zea land champion) and Tom O’Malley (Australian champion) before a crowded audience. The fight went the full distance, the judges disagreeing, and the referee gave the decision in favour of Campbell. O'Malley frequently carried the fight to Campbell, but the latter made him miss repeatedly, countering effectively with solid right rips to the body and lefts to the head. O'Malley, with his longer reach, had the advantage at long range, but a great many of his punches were taken on Campbell’s gloves. It was a fine contest from the start, with the margin of points in favour of Campbell. At the finish Alf. Cleverley challenged the winner. LIGHT-HEAVY-WEIGHT TITLE. HASTINGS. July 31. Cyril Thompson (Hastings) 12.1 and Jim Broadfoot (Auckland) 11.8 fought here to-night for the light-heavy-weight title of New Zealand, at present held by Broadfoot. The contest, which went the full 15»rounds, was rather tame, aid the decision was a draw.
