Borne along on the wings of a westerly gale, the giant engines roaring at full speed, the West Australian Airways liner Viastra succeeded on July’ 1 in smashing all records for the flight from Perth to Adelaide. The average flying speed for the 1450 miles was 132 miles an hour, and the previous record was lowered by the appreciable time of 30 minutes. At times the aircraft raced along at 150 miles an hour. The eight passengers, who left Perth at 1.30 p.m. on the Tuesday, arrived in the South Australian capital at 1.40 p.m. on the Wednesday, and of the 224 hours occupied on the journey 114 hours were spent in the Forrest hostel. A still more advanced type of Viastra is on order from the English firm of Vickers, and is expected in September. More speed records may be expected when it is placed in commission.
