PUDDING WISHES.
Stir the pudding well and true, ’Tis the proper thing to do. Close your eyes and take the spoon While your dearest wish you croon, Oh, so softly, then it may Come to pass on Christmas Day. Ev’ry year at Christmastide For some bit of luck I’ve tried. “ Give me, magic pudding, please. Wealth and wisdom—things like these, Give me diamonds, care, and clothes, Houses, horses—things like those.” Then I’ve waited till the night. When they say that mystic sprite In the Christmas pudding hid Gives to mortals what they bid; But my efforts all are vain— Puddings give—just a pain ! —L. E. V., in Answers.
