“The worst of these young women is that they no sootier get into a position than they get married.” commented Mr T. Hewetson at a meeting of the Nelson Hospital Board recently when the appointment of a nurse was being considered (states the Mail). “Well, we can’t pass any regulations governing that,” said the chairman (Mr F. ,W. O. Smith). Returned soldiers of Auckland are much perturbed by : the appearance in a Queen street shop window of an imitatioif Victoria Cross, and (says the Star) efforts are being made to have it removed. Across the cross are the words “ For valour,” the inscription borne by the genuine decoration. “ I don’t know what the shopkeeper’s idea is,” commented the secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr E. H. Sharp. “ The imitation cross appears to me to hold the genuine decoration up to ridicule.” Representations have been made to the Defence Department and to Brigadier H. R. Potter to see whether steps can be taken to compel the shopkeeper to remove the cross.
