“ The Passing of Conan Doyle,” by the editor, and “ A Scandal in Bohemia ” — first of the long Sherlock Holmes series—are two interesting memorials to the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the Strand Magazine for September. “ Celebrities in Caricature,” by Frank Rutter, deals with Messrs Bernard Shaw, Arnold Bennett, and G. K. Chesterton, while “ A Treasure-house of Books ” and “ America Revisited ” are two further articles. The short stories in the issue are by Denis Mackail, Louis Kaye, Douglas Newton, Bertram Atkey, Algernon Blackwood, Austin Philips, and Dale Collins.
The October issue of the Home, the popular Australian journal, is a travel number introduced with a cover design and decorations by Adrian Feint, and including eight special pages of travel photographs. “ A Series of Pictures,” by E. O. Hoppe, illustrates the little-known beauty of design of house roofs, while five pages of views of the Archibald memorial fountain show to advantage the beautiful piece of statuary in Hyde. Park, Sydney. Nine pages of social photographs are wholly pleasing and attractive. The reading matter in the issue coves a wide range. There are the articles “ This, That, and Then,” by T. H. Cochran; “ Travelogues,” which give glimpses of different parts of the world; “ Unorthodox Impressions,” an amusing travel article by Angela Thirkell; a short story by Lois Southern ; and articles on “ Picnic Meals,” “ Beach Wear,” “ Train Telephones,” “ Fashions,” and so on, to please any woman’s taste.
