Davies (Napier). MANAWATU TOURNAMENT. MISS KAY IN SEMI-FINAL. PALMERSTON N.. October 9. The Manawatu ladies’ golf tournament was commenced to-day. There were no surprises in the first round of the championship, but several games were closely contested, that between Mrs Hosking (Titirangi) and Miss Lascelles (Australia) going to the nineteenth. In the second round Mrs Guy Williams (Masterton), playing a very steady game, defeated Miss B. Gaisford at the eighteenth, 1 up, but Mrs H. Collinson and Miss Watson, both Manawatu players, and Miss Kay (Dunedin) won with a fair - margin. Results: — First Round. Miss Gaisford (Manawatu) beat Miss Currie (Wanganui) 0 and 4. Mrs Guy Williams (Masterton) beat Miss B. Vincent (Manawatu) 3 and 2. Miss N. Innes (Manawatu) beat Mrs J. Steel (Wellington) 5 and 3. Miss S. Watson (Manawatu) beat Mrs Dorrington (Dannevirke) G and 5. Mrs H. Collinson (Manawatu) beat Mrs D. C. Collins (Wairarapa) 2 and 1. Miss D. Chrystall (Christchurch) beat Mrs M. Guy (Manawatu) 3 and 2. Mrs W. Hosking (Titirangi) beat Miss Lascelles (Australia) 1 up. Miss 0. Kay (Dunedin) beat Mrs Broderick (Wanganui) 3 and 2. Second Round. Mrs Williams beat Miss Gaisford 1 up. _ Miss Watson beat Miss Innes 7 and 5. Mrs Collinson beat Miss Chrystall 3 and 1. Miss Kay beat Mrs Hosking 7 and G. SEMI-FINALS TO-DAY. In the semi-finals to-morrow Mrs Williams plays Miss Watson and Mrs Collinson plays Miss Kay. WANGANUI AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. WANGANUI, October 11. The Wanganui amateur golf championship meeting was concluded to-day in perfect weather. Results: —• Semi-finals. W. B. Reilly beat J. Goss, 2 and 1. B. Silk beat F. C. Hutchison, 1 up. Final. Reilly beat Silk, 2 and 1. Reilly played the more steady golf, and was better on the short work round the green. Silk played better in the semi-finals, going out in three under bogey. SOUTH AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. HAMILTON, October 11. The South Auckland golf championship was won by J. L. Black (Hamilton), who beat H. A. Black (Miramar), 3 and 2.
OTAGO CLUB. The first round of the Otago Golf Club’s championship was played on the Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon and resulted in- several surprises. J. W. Trewern, the present holder of the championship, was decisively beaten by D. H. Butcher, the match finishing on the. thirteenth green with Butcher the winner by 6 up and 5 to play. G. Gibson beat N. G. Hay, the present Otago champion, by 3 and' 2. J. G. Dick and J. R. Laidlaw, who had gone ncck-and-neck in the qualifying rounds, had a great battle, and the match was carried to the twentieth green with Laidlaw the victor. E. A. Reed failed to produce the good form he has shown lately, and T. D. Adams carried this game to the last green, where E. A. Reed won by 1 up. C. T. Irvine, last year’s runner-up. was too good for R. W. Dick, winning by 6 and 4. R. E. Hayward rather easily accounted for L. H. Marshall, winning by 4 and 3; and J. Spence was too strong for S. L. Wilson, gaining a win 6 and 5.
The first round of the matches in the Balmacewen Cup competition was also played. The results were as follow:— J. Manson beat P. W. Clarkson, 1 up; J. H. Gilkison beat J. A. Jenkins, 4 and 3; T. B. Ferguson beat D. R. L. Stevenson, 6 and 5; W. E. Earnshaw beat T. S. Holme, 4 and 2; G. P. Latimer, beat JI. Henderson, 3 and 2; G. A. Russell beat H. O. M'Farlane, 5 and 3; F. S. Salinger beat C. Shnttleworth, 2 up; K. Ross, jun., beat J. R. Paterson, 3 and 2; A. O. Russell beat J. G. Dykes, 4 and 3; R. F. Barr beat W. G. M'Clymont, 3 and 1.
