- DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. First Day—Saturday. October 11. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting, after two - postponements, was opened in fine weather, but the card concluded in showers of rain. The going . was on the heavy side, and there was a fair attendance The racing was inter- . esting, although some decisive wins were recorded during the day. The scratch mg pen was freely used on the card, and the fields consequently changed a good deal from their asnect on the declaration of • acceptances. Amorist and Troilus were taken out of the, Spring Hurdles, for which Gay - Fashion finished favourite. When the ■ field settled down to business Membo and Gay Fashion were disputing leadership with Star Tractor taking a hand. Membo and Gaj’ Fashion set the pace along the - back, and after the former made a faulty jump at the second last hurdle he tame on again and won nicely by four lengths from Gay Fashion, who beat Beauty ‘ by five lengths Star Tractor finished a moderate fourth, and Ship- _ shape was first horse beaten in tbe race The scratching pen deleted Jaloux. Royal Limond. Skysign Solanum. and Little Duchess from the Trial Stakes. Master Anomaly started a pronounced favourite, and justified the confidence by winning comfortably from Kakara. who was the only one to finish near tbe favourite. Winsome Hind was a moderate third in a strung-out field, and Uxbridge a bad fourth Palada got badly away, and after Standard Rose, Tippling, and Night Parade were close up in the early - stages there was nothing in it bar tbe first two over the final three furlongs Dumblane. Royal Limond, Rosewood, Moy Hall, and Ballance were taken out of the Maungatua Handicap Riri was made a short-priced favourite, and anything else apart from Gustavo was showing a good price. They got away from a fair line, but Riri was slow to move, being second last away, and Good Gift got left Gustavo and Water Power at once singled thmeselves out, and opened up a good lead before reaching the far turn from Traho and Impertinence in a then strung-out field Gustavo was still well clear with Water Power going up the rise, and the latter commenced tp stop before reaching the home turn, where Riri had moved up to third place. Gustavo was well clear at the distance where Riri commenced to overhaul him Gustavo finally stalled off Riri and beat bim by a neck. Impertinence was a good four lengths away, with Good Gift next. Riri was a good bet beaten, and Good Gift also ran a good race after getting badly away. Gustavo put up a good performance at the weights, and the race should help to sharpen him up for his engagement in the Dunedin Guineas. Bitractor appeared to get knocked back at the six-furlong post.

Meadow Lark, Praise, and Greenaway were taken out of the Electric Handicap. Compensation started a good favourite, carrying a shade more than twice the support accorded Charmaine, with Waving Corn a close third choice. Waving Corn and Red Boa were both in the pen at the rise of the barrier, and the former wag slow to find her feet Spoon arid Charmaine were smartest away, and led Compensation, who was waiting in behind, along the back They were joined by tied Boa before reaching the home turn, where they ran in line just in front of Compensation, and Waving Corn Compensation got blocked, but finally worked through, and. stalling off Waving Corn, beat her by a short head Spoon faded end after Red Boa, who was a gap of thiee lengths behind the leaders, came Charmaine and Rin Tin Tin The Mpsgiel Handicap field was reduced to four runners, and they provided an excellent betting race. Circulation finished £26 10s better favourite than Black Duke, who was £2 10s better than down Major Black Duke got the best of the start and he led Town Major out ™ the straight. Racing along the back Black Duke was showing the way to the others, who were racing in line ’ Roval Game dropped back going up the rise, and when they straightened for home town Major joined the leader, and finally won comfortably without being called upon by a length. Royal Game finished about six lengths away, and Circulation S c d to nothing in the run home. Duke may have been unlucky in being forced to make the running through getting the best of the start but Town Major won with so much in hand that he must have scored no mailer how the race was run

Chief Light. Irish Chieftain. Ossiman. a «« ’Enwood were struck out of the M'Lean Stakes. Song Box. on the rails, and Loshlaggan carried most support. They were in good line at the rise of the barrier. Song Box Fair Weather, and Flying Amy were smartest away and Amy Johnson last to leave. Flying Amy soon dropped back and racing oast the three-furlong post Song Box and Fair Weather had drawn clear of Grecian Prince. They showed the way to the straight, where Lochlaggan and Hula Belle drew up to the leaders. Sone Box commenced to fade in the last 50 yards, and although Lochlaggan carried Fair Weather out he lasted long enough to beat her by a neck. Hula Belle was half a length away, with Song Box the same distance away fourth, followed by Last March and Flower

Royal Game, Smithereens and High Gear dropped out of the October Handicap. On Top finish d a little over £5O better favourite than Rascal and Salmo Salat was a close up third in demand. Caterpillar and Valdamo led out while Salmo Salar at once dropped back Caterni'lar and Valdamo were running just in front of Rascal and On Top near the tar turn, when Valdamo dropped back and fell. On Top and Rascal moved up near the home turn and once in the straight Rascal and On Top came away. Rascal outstayed On Top. and beat him a short length.
