END OF SEASON.

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. A very successful social gathering was held by the Otago centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association in

the Embassy Salon on Saturday night, when the prizes won during the harrier season were presented to the winners. The chair was occupied by the vicepresident (Mr C. W. Clark), who apologised for the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr E. L. Macassey). Amongst those present was the Minister of Public Works (Mr AV. B. Taverner), who was accorded a very hearty welcome. Mr Taverner, who found practically at the last minute that he was able to attend, said he was delighted to participate in such a gathering. He congratulated the Caversham members on their excellent performances during the season, stating that the occasion was unique, inasmuch as every teams’ race was won by that club. He mentioned that he had had the pleasure of meeting the Otago team in Wellington, and showing them over Parliament House. He thought they were a fine lot of athletes, and was not surprised when he learned that they had been successful in the New Zealand Cross-country Championship. The qualities which made a good harr’er were also prominent in making a good man in any walk of life. The very best thing that a man could have said to him in the course of his life was that he was a good sport. He had special pleasure in presenting the Taverner Cup. awarded for the Junior Cross-country* Championship. Last year it was won by Mornington, and this year by Caversham. In conclusion, Mr Taverner expressed the hope that the Caversham Chib would not be like Alexander the Great, who sat dowu and wept when he could find no more worlds to conquer.
