While tire decision to close the Mount Somers-Springburn section of railway line is being reconsidered, the service is being continued just as has been the case for the last 40 years, but not so officially. It is learned (says the Springburn correspondent of the Ashburton Guardian) that each day-the head ganger at Springburn receives a communication from headquarters informing him that a “special” train will run from Mount Somers at night and return in the morning. The extra trains at present running on the line are ballasting above Anama. The manner in which money begets money is exemplified by Mr R. E. M'Dougall’s gift to Christchurch of £25.000 for the new Art Gallery (says the Press). The gift was announced on March 10, 1928, and soon after Mr M‘Dougall’s cheque was received by the City Council and put into a trust account. According to the financial statement presented at the latest meeting of the council, the total amount to the credit of this trust account was £26,862 7s 9d—on deposit £26,800, and the remainder in current account.
