August 5. - The twenty-ninth sweepstake clay pigeon match for the championship of New Zealand was held under the auspices of the North Canterbury Gun Club at Rangiora to-day. The winner was S. Anderson, Methven. There were 37 entries, and the prize-money was divided among six competitors who tied, all on. Anderson won the shoot off. The six qualifying were S. Anderson, D. Davidson (Culverden), T. Wrigley (Levin), J. Winchester (Ellesmere), H. Grensell (Christchurch), pnd C. Seddon (East Hamilton). The t conditions were 21 birds off .18 cards. The match was fired in a dull light, and in a . heavy sou’-wesf wind and ceaseless rain. 1 Anderson shot all 21 birds, and in the (shoot off beat Wentworth at the twentieth I bird, so that the winner shot 41 birds 11 straight. 3 t SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. < CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. The South Island pigeon shooting championships oh the Rangiora Gun 1 Club’s grounds on Saturday was won by ' E. Lansdell, of Lumsden, W. G. Gerard, ! of Hororata, being runner-up. Th?re ’ were 24 entries, and the birds were shot on a 35 yards rise. Lansdell secured the Gun Club’s medal and prize money of £2B 16s was divided between Lansdell, Gerard, M. Anderson, P. Truscott, and A. Anderson. SPARROW CHAMPIONSHIP. R. ARNST THE WINNER. CHRISTCHURCH, August 7. The seventeenth annual New Zealand Sparrow Championship was shot to-day under the auspices'of the Springston Gun Club at Sockburn, and was won by R. Arnst, Christchurch. There were 52 entries from all parts of the Dominion, The prize money divided among six competitors who tied in the first shoot and who later competed in the shoot off. The six were R. Arnst (Christchurch), H. Clinch (King Country), W. R. Henry (Christchurch), R. MTlwrick (South Canterbury), R. E. Farrow (Waikato), and J. Simpson (Christchurch). All six killed 19 birds. In the shoot off —five birds —Arnst, Clinch, Henry, and MTlwrick were all on. The match was then decided on the first miss out. Henry and MTlwrick lost their next bird, and Clinch lost the eleventh bird, leaving Arnst the winner. BASKET BALL. A GRADE. Albany 22, First 6. University I 27, University II 12. The match between Oamaru and Otago for the Taverner Cup was played on the Union Court, Dunedin, on Saturday. Although rain had fallen only a few hours previously tire ground had dried and the court was in fairly good condition. The teams were as follow:— Otago.—Misses Eggers (captain), Meinung. Thomson, Adams, Sinclair, Haley, Burns. Harrington, Moir. Oamaru. —Misses Tiddy. Carson, Tempero (captain). Miller, Campbell, Fox, Herron, Faris, MTaggart. Time was called with the score 27 —6 in favour of Otago. The visiting team was entertained at tea at the Otago Women’s Club. GOLF. OTAGO CLUB. The anual knock-out competition was played on Balmacewen links on Saturday afternoon. Results: — First Round.
