SECONDARY SCHOOLS.
STATE ISSUE OF FREE BOOKS
. WELLINGTON, April 23. 1’ airly extensive use is being made of the recent provision by the State of free secondary school books in necessitous cases.
“ The extension of the concession 'of free school books in necessitous cases to secondary schools has naturally resulted m an increase in the expenditure on books/ said the Director of Education (Mr T. B. Strong) when discussing the matter to-day. “I do not think, how ever, that the increase in claims for free books indicates an increase in poverty throughout New Zealand, but is merely the result of the greater publicity given to this concession.”
