DUNEDIN CENTRE TOURNAMENT.
THE RINKS. The Dunedin Bowling Centres Easter tournament was advanced a stage further when the rinks competition was brought to finality. Ihe early morning promise of a continuance of the fine weather which had prevailed since the comfuffinml Cnt r° £ tournamen t was not flow n • i l or tle greater part of the day the sky was more or less clouded, and an unpleasant wind was in evidence! About 3 p.m. the temperature dropped considerably, and some rain made matters very disagreeable for the players and spectators alike. Fortunately the rain was not sufficient to interrupt the play lhe day was devoted to the rinks and pairs competitions, which were played on rinks 'whVl* ® rccn ’. nd Die consolation links which occupied attention on the Caledonian and Caversham greens. 1 i , K ? nks Championship contest was fc g, w 1 a CO1 ? C asion. In the final a W est Harbour rink, skipped by W Connor, had an easy win over a North-East A' alley rink, skipped by Ilely. West Harbour did reinark.ibly well in this competition, for in addition to Connor’s success a rink skipped by J. Veitch secured tli.rd p.aee. A Dunedin rink, of which G. Deare was skip, filled fourth place. In the game between Connor and Dears in the semi-final of the rinks the former after C tlm X n In ‘1 ? V’™ 6 heads > and ’ W P uned ’ n rink lied got two, the Harl .’ our Payers put on a three, a single, and a four, thus leading by 14 points to 2 when seven heads had ’been r u A i 31 1! and a two to D eare weie followed by two singles to Connor. Deare tnen got a pair, and Connor a ■single. Ihe scoring was equal in the nnal stages of the game, which ended; on the fifteenth head, when Connor led by 18 points to 9. Tn the contest between Healy and Veitch, the after scored a single on the first head, but North-East Valiev responded with a three and a single. ‘West Harbour equalised the scores bv getting a two and a single, and ran into the lead with another single. At the end of the seventh head the scores were five all. A two to West Harbour was followed by a three to the other rink, but Veitch ran. into a lead of five points by getting a two and a four. Holy then got a three, which left him two down. On the thir-' teenth head, which was the last played, Hely trailed the kitty for four, and at Veitch failed with his last bowl, NorthEast A alley won by two points, PAIRS COAIPETITION. Finality was reached on Tuesday, when the three games necessary to complete the pairs competition were decided. The weather was fine and the green was fast. The final was fought out between Steel (Dunedin) and Papps (Ed'endale), and after a prolonged contest the former won by a single point. From a scoring point of view, the game was a remarkable one, the figures being equal on no fewer than nine occasions before the end was reached. For the first 10 heads the scoring alternated, and. strangely enough, the Dunedin players scored the same number of points as the other pair had put on on the previous head. Steel then ran into a good lead, and when 15 ends had been decided it appeared very probable that he would have an easy win, as he was then eight up. Edendale gradually reduced the lead, however, and, with i 9 heads played, the figures read 19 all. Steel then scored a single, but Papps followed suit, and thj game ended in a tie.
According to the rules governing tha tournament another game of 21 heads should have been played, but as the Eden-' dale pair found it imperative to return home by the second express the centre officials held a hurried meeting and ’decided that six more heads should be played, w’th a provision for a seventh in the event ot another tie. In the second game the scores were two all and four all, but at the end of the sixth head Dunedin had a lead of one point. Air AV. Crawford, who was again in* charge of the green, was very helpful txj the press representatives. The following are the results:— POST-SECTION PLAY. Second Round. Steel 13 beat Robson 11. Semi-final.
