BOOKMAKERS FINED.
BETTING ON LARGE SCALE. , r AUCKLAND, April 24. Iwo bookmakers who were caimlit carrying on business on a large scale dury^Ath i e E <i ste £ h ° lida ys. were each fined £lOO by Mr E. C. Cutten. S.M.. in the lolice Court this morning. They were Archibald Anderson, aged 29, who admitted using premises situated at Hobson street as a common gaming house on April 21 last, and William Alfred Mackay, aged 38, who pleaded guilty to a similar offence on April 19, committed at 1 Newton Arcade. Detective Sergeant Kelly said that when Detective Sergeant M'Hugh and Detective Nalder visited Mackay’s premises on April 19 they heard him quoting “ doubles ” over the telephone. In 16 minutes the detectives took 16 bets to the value of £l4 5s from people over the telephone. Another client rang up, and wanted to lay £lOO. but realising that he was speaking to someone -other than the accused, he discontinued his conversation. It was evident that Mackay had been doing business in a large way. In 1927 he was fined £/5 for bookmaking, and in June, 1925, and May last. £75 and £lOO respectively for keeping a common gaming house. “ This man is also in business on a fairly large scale,” said the detective sergeant. regarding Anderson. Anderson’s premises were equipped with telephone betting cards ami betting slips, evidence that he was doing business on a large scale. He was no stranger to the court, as in August, 1927. he was fined £25 for assisting in the management of a common gaming house, and in June, 1928. and December. 1928, he was penalised to the extent of £75, for keeping a common gaming house.
