EDUCATION SYSTEM.

SELECT COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

MINISTER ANTICIPATES GOOD RESULTS.

Highly satisfactory results are expected by the Minister of Education (Mr 11. Atmore) from the investigations of the Select Committee which has lieen examining the education system of New Zealand.

The Minister, in an interview with the AA’ellington correspondent of the Christchurch Times, stated that the committee, which had during last week been assembled in AA’ellington for the purpose of preparing its report, had adjourned until the end of February. A sub-com-mittee, consisting of Messrs P. Fraser, G. IL Sykes, and G. C. Black, had lieen set up to draft the report for submission to the full committee when it resumed A large number of recommendations of first importance have been made by the committee, and there are sufficient recommendations in to justify the compilation of the first section of the report, which promises to be very interesting.

The Minister added that the committee has made an exhaustive investiga tion, and had received expert evidence from specialists in all branches of education, including members of the controlling authorities. There are a few minor subjects still to be considered, and these will be taken at the end of next month, when the committee reassembles.

The report will embody and amplify all the authorities and illustrations showing the necessity for the changes recommended. All the recommendations were arrived at by meetings of the who’c committee, and the sub committee which has been set up is to submit a draft of the report to the full committee when it resumes.

“ I wish to pay a tribute to the work of the members of the committee, who have been most assiduous in their attendance and unwearying in their efforts to obtain first-hand information during the tour they made throughout the Dominion,” said the Minister. “ I feel that the report will prove of interest to all New Zealanders, and that the result will be an improvement in sever-il directions of our already good system.”
