tAKE COUNTY.
January 24.—Heavy raia was experienced throughout Tuesday. This was accompanied by snow on the high country. The weather cleared on Wednesday, and it has since been fine.
Cricket.—A team of Lowburn cricketers visited Arrowtown on Saturday, and played a one-innings match against an Arrow team. The scores were low on both sides, Arrow winning by 10 runs. Scores —Arrow 56 (J. Fletcher 29. W. Shaw 15 not out); Lowburn 46 (R. G. Varcoe 24. A. Bell 11). Brown (6 for 14) and F Partridge (4 for 42) divided the bowling honours for Lowburn, while L. Knox (6 for 17) and Fletcher <2 for ?>) were the most successful bowlers for Arrow.
Bowling.—Five rinks of bowlers (resident and visiting! from Queenstown journeyed to Cromwell on Saturday to play a match against the club there. Although three Cromwell rinks were up by small margins. the visitors won on the aggregate— Wakatipu 105, Cromwell 86. —A match against the Canadian bowlers will be played at Queenstown on February 5. Queenstown Citizens' Carnival.—A meeting of the Executive Committee was held on Friday last, when a rough statement of accounts showed that the net result of the carnival held at Christmas was approximately £l4O. A public meeting will be held on Friday next to decide to what objects the money will be allocated. The chairman (Dr Anderson» congratulated the committee on the success of the carnival, and he made special reference to the assistance given by several outside the committee. These were Mr ami Mrs Wilson Wallace and family, Miss T. Ryan (stewardess in charge of s.s. Earnslaw). Messrs F. Gardiner. and Romans (sideshows).
Wedding.—A wedding of considerable district interest was celebrated at St. Mark's Anglican Church, Takapau. Hawke's Bay. on the 14th inst., when Miss Kathleen Aldrich, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. S. Aldrich, of “ Hessett,” Takapau. was married to Mr William Robert Paterson, eldest son of Mr and Mrs K. M. Paterson, of “ Ayrburn," Arrowtown. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Blathwayt. of Takapau, assisted by the Rev. G. Davidson, of Woodville, both uncles of the bridegroom. Miss Hawkins presided at the organ. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, was attended by two bridesmaids—Miss Dorothy Ahirich (sister of the bride) and Miss Pat. Paterson (sister of the bridegroom,. Mr E. C. Paterson (brother of the bridegroom) was best man, and Mr Thomas Scott (Gibbston) was groomsman. After the ceremony a reception was held at " Hessett," and the customary toasts were proposed and honoured. Mr and Mrs Paterson's future home will be at West Dome Station. Mossburn. Death.—The news of the death at Invercargill on Tuesday last of Constable John I. Melville, was received with general regret in this district. During the eight years he was stationed in Arrowtown he made many friends. He was a most kindhearted man, and was ever ready to give assistance to those in need. His widow and two daughters will have the sympathy of many friends in this district in their bereavement.
General.—Shearing is now practically finished.—At the last meeting of directors of the Lake County Co-operative Dairy Co. it was decided that the price per pound for butter-fat be reduced from Is tid to Is 4d as from January 1 last.—At a special meeting of the Queenstown Borough Council. Wednesday was again fixed as the day upon ■which the weekly half-holiday is to be observed in Queenstown for the current year. -—-On Thursday morning. IGth inst., the Misses Rosa and Doris White, of Timaru, who have been staying with their aunt, Mrs A. Grant, of Lake Hayes, swam across Lake Hayes, n distance of approximately one mile. The girls accomplished the distance in 40 minutes.
Rille Shooting.—The fifth competition for President Mackenzie's trophy was held on the Queenstown range on Saturday last. The conditions were seven shots at ?.00yds and COOyds. and the following were the scores :— AV. Nelson 57. D. R. Gray 55, A. Simson 51. T. It. M’Kinlay 48. J. Munro 47. A cup shoot (seven shots at 500yds) resulted—D. K. Gray 33, A. Simson 32, W. Nelson 32.
