PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED.

The Christmas number of the Strand Magazine contains many of the features which have contributed to its success — fiction written by some of the foremost writers —and some specials. One of these is a coloured supplement, “ The Men Who Make Us Laugh,” being an article on prominent cartoonists ami specimens of their work. There are many short stories, articles, and sketches, and the number is worthy 7 of the magazine and the season. V * * Aussie for January is a “ railway number,” and its contents include many jokes at the expense of those who win their living by running or stopping (at proper times and places) the railways, and not a few of the others are made about the people who use and abus» them. Altogether it is a happy number, and places the railwayman in the distinguished company which, in classes or groups, have been used in turn to make special numbers for Aussie in the past.

Tn pursuing its vigorous policy of popufarising the railways the department has published an attractive folder descriptive of Otira and the walk over 10 miles of Alpine enchantment. “ Charm of Franz Josef ” describes “ the world’s most beautiful glacier,” and in this the pictures and the letterpress are attractive. The Railway Department is showing commendable enterprise in its endeavour to place New Zealand’s scenic

wonders in their proper position among the big sights of the world.
